Rat Race

Heavily focusing on an early 2000s Melbourne as the setting, Rat Race is a piece that leans heavily on iconic Melbourne like settings, and stereotypical imagery of working a draining office job. The accompanying soundtrack, by Melbourne based indie rock duo, 'The 3 Spoons', completes the piece, with its bizarre narrative, and humorous lyrics.

Rat Race has been a long time in making the idea first coming to me upon co-writing, and hearing the earliest demos of the song. As the music evolved so did the vision for the piece. Production started in Jan of 2022, with hours of asset creation and texturing, followed by weeks of rigging, and finally animation.

Rat Race was primarily modelled and animated within Maya. Arnold render was used for rendering, Photoshop for texture work, and Aftereffects for scene compositing and touch up. The chorus scenes however, were animated in 2D, differentiating them. This created both stronger, and more contrasting imagery, reflecting the tonal shift which occurs within the song.
