The Dummy

Certain depictions of women in cartoons since the 40s are sexualised, perhaps because men led the industry and in turn shaped this male fantasized aesthetic. The statues design is typical of the sexy female archetype in cartoon animation, figuratively and literally showing the objectification of women. It is a codified entity for the male gaze, ironically created by the women in this case, as a means to distract the men in addition to providing entertainment for the women. This traditional 2D hand-drawn animation style and design from old cartoons of Tex Avery, Warner Bros and Hana Barbera reflect old-fashioned stereotypes addressed in the narrative.

The aim of this project is to make the viewer revise the contemporary stereotypical societal views of “traditional” gender roles that have been set ever since the Stone Age. I also want to preserve the styles and techniques used in old cartoons that are rarely produced today.
